Tarpaulin trailer
Tarpaulin trailer
It belongs to the classics: a flatbed tarpaulin trailer. In this variant the tarpaulin trailer has a normal platform body which has a rollable tarpaulin or sliding elements at the sides and at the top which can be closed. Only the front wall at the prime mover is stable and fixed.
The design of a tarpaulin trailer has proven its worth because of the easy loading and unloading. Even though the trailer looks very simple: in combination with the corresponding details the trailer can be quickly transformed to a special vehicle.
Such an example is the extremely impressive “*Megatrailer*” with its gigantic loading height of 3 m. Such a loading volume up to 100 m³ enables to stack palettes on several levels. A vehicle combination with such a megatrailer belongs to the so-called Jumbo truck. As towing vehicle are special tractors required, so-called “lowliners” which have an especially low coupling height. These lowliners are often used by automobile suppliers.
A curtainsider trailer is the improved variant of the original tarpaulin trailer. It is also known as tautliner. The curtainsider is characterized by the possibility to load and unload the trailer from every side which is very time saving. If the load is on palettes it is even possible to unload the trailer from two sides with two forklifts. Further the trailer can transport goods which would not fit through the rear door. When the loading is finished the curtain is drawn. The stability is given by the frame which is connected to the front wall and the rear door.
Another kind of tarpaulin trailer is the so-called Edscha trailer. The Edscha trailer is named after its manufacturers. In this trailer the sides can be opened but also the roof can be pulled off. This makes the Edscha trailer especially suitable for loads which can be picked up with a crane vehicle. The most famous manufacturers of tarpaulin trailers are Kässbohrer and Wecon. Curtainside trailer are produced by Kögel and Schmitz Cargobull.
